At Your Door 04:58
Darkened roads are not worth running When all you see is what’s not coming Straight ahead, out through your eyes A foreign bed in which you lie A classic case of mental friction When you correlate the facts and fiction In your head with what’s out your eyes What you said was coated with lies You’ve grown old, but I’ve grown bolder You may be strong, but I’m a soldier Back from war to unlock the door I feel the cold upon your shoulder Not the warmth, the somber smolder At your core that I felt before You approached with affirmation As I groped for admiration From your eyes, they swiftly led To my demise, I should’ve fled You’ve grown old, but I’ve grown bolder You may be strong, but I’m a soldier Back from war to unlock the door I feel the cold upon your shoulder Not the warmth, the somber smolder At your core that I felt before

Elemental 03:50
As a child elemental Fear-filled and fighting off the devil With 103 degrees A mother praying on her knees Hurry night please steal the day So you can blindly lead the way Through the lack of light and calm My clammy fright lies in your palms I can't hold on You say I'm strong I can't hold on At least the hospital's consistent Nothing feels worse than the incisions Made when pity piles high You barely balance but you try And then it all caves down Using grins to hide frowns Optimism's just a high Just tricking yourself not to cry I can't hold on You say I'm strong I can't hold on

Which way will you run Towards the moon or towards the sun Greatness flows from those who can sting But have never stung Which way will you fly Towards the ground or towards the sky What’s the point in facing your fears If you’ll never fight Now let it sink in You built up your heart now thicken your skin You’d have plenty to lose If you lost what you’ve got to win And if you see the signs Would you care to explain why you haven't been the same Since you crossed that line Into a place I couldn’t find The tension is thick And you and I are in the thick of it But you voiced your choice And that leads to your paralysis And if you seen the signs Would you care to explain why you haven't been the same Since you crossed that line Into a place I couldn’t find See the sun, will you follow See the moon, will you follow See the ground, will you follow See the sky, will you follow
4.
We packed our bags with Everything we had just to Leave the place where they had Tied our hands so we could Escape our fate so we could Escape the weight of the world The boundary's thick so we Flicked our bics and Used the flames to light our Cigarette tips so now we've Escaped our fate so now we've Escaped the weight of the world So put your ear to the ground and Listen to the sound of our Feet walking running sprinting to the edge of town The day is dull but our Hearts are full with a Need for love and a Hate for lull so now we've Escaped our fate so now we've Escaped the weight of the world We'll sink our teeth into every Opportunity that will Cross our path from sea to Shining sea so now we've Escaped our fate so no we've Escaped the weight of the world So throw your voice to the sky (hey!) and Dance all day and all night Make a break and escape with your friends near by So throw your voice to the sky (hey!) and Dance all day and all night Make a break and escape with your friends near by So put your ear to the ground and Listen to the sound of our Feet walking running sprinting to the edge of town

Sing to me my friend my time is wearing thin Your hands are smooth with every move through the rapid wind We see you there Stealing the breath from the winter air And your satin skin Smoother than the crisp winter wind You mounted frames on every wall you lived between To hang the fraying images you had ventured to see And keep away from me Sing to me my friend my time is wearing thin Your hands are smooth with every move through the rapid wind Next to me a manic frantic centipede One hundred tiny legs are dancing spastically On the bark of a tree He crawls and he climbs up the withered vine Through the wooden frame that leads him inside Through your mind
6.
Mother can you hear me through my dense head The darkness overwhelms me and I can't defend There's comfort in your words, there's comfort in your touch But nothing that you say will ever be enough 'Cause my skin cracks And my bones lack Their density Intensity Overwhelming me Father can you heal me I've gone too far The future overwhelms me and opens old scars There's comfort in your words there's comfort in your touch But I worry what I say will never be enough 'Cause my skin cracks And my bones lack Their density Intensity Overwhelming me Father can you heal me I've gone too far
7.
Lightning flashed behind our eyes Silhouetted clouds in the darkened skies One hand on the wheel one hand in mine Driving past fields of white Our shadows grew tall as the sun went down And crept and crawled through the cracking ground They cast no light they made no sound We closed our eyes they could not be found But our hearts had stayed within our chests Behind a cage of ribs and flesh We strained to hide in an empty place But our shadows had found that our feet had traced On the splintered ground a hurried pace Too soon we found we could not escape But our hearts had stayed within our chests Behind a cage of ribs and flesh

Painted Eyes 04:25
The monster's in the attic and the hell is in your head The bones are in the closet as you hide under your bed It's where you fled Your head is full of knowledge of the world beyond your eyes Though your lids and lashes coated with the paint from our past lives Now all you feel is that paint dry Dry your eyes It isn't worth putting on a disguise Not this time Your eyes are full of colors that I thought I'd never see Your warming, hooded presence is all I'll ever need You're the greatest company You try your very hardest to cover up your tracks To hide from painted memories that attempt to hold you back Now all you feel is that paint crack Dry your eyes It isn't worth putting on a disguise Not this time Dry your eyes It isn't worth putting on a disguise Not this time
9.
Would I still feel the chill creeping up and down my spine And a heart falls apart when your loving it turns to greed A sea of opportunities is crashing down on me Trading copper for gold What does it mean for me to climb the taller tree And trade in copper for gold Would I still feel the chill creeping up and down my spine When your hand brushes against mine And your eyes meet mine What kind of prominence is worth the accident Of trading love for gold Listening to the lies instead of living life Trading love for gold And a heart falls apart when your loving it turns to greed A gilded spade plants the seed Of an unclimbable tree What does it mean for me to climb the taller tree And watch it cut down beneath my feet What kind of prominence is worth the accident Of losing the only one who sees How I feel when I kneel to the one who stands on my hands Instead of the one who holds my hand The one who holds my hand
10.
Not once did I feel that you weren't real I kept you in the back of my mind where we Crept and we leapt over unending descents That hide what I don't want to find You and I are stuck in a prism Of dark and light incandescent confusion Cuz I know your type You're not one to stay You thought you grew up And now you're running away From all of your debts Your sins and regrets In an attempt to start over

about

Morning Brigade Chapel Hill, North Carolina

When Peter Vance came to Chapel Hill from Washington, DC, he had been playing his songs as a one-man band for years. Pianist Gabriel Reynolds approached Peter with an interest in giving his songs the treatment they deserved. It was with the addition of Christian Adams' cello, Eli Howells' fiddling fingers, Nathan Spain's drumming, and Mary Koenig's harmonies that the songs truly came to life. ... more
