Mosaic
04:31
|
|||
Everything you knew you thought you would know forever
Like every second past was a task that would last forever
But you admit to yourself you were unprepared
For the wrinkles in her hands and the tangles in her hair
Now everything you know is lost forever
You were lost in a thought that I thought you would never conceive
Memories as old as the knots in your granddaddy's sleeves
But you admit to yourself you could not recognize
The power of her smile and the fire in her eyes
The water has risen up to your knees
The figure in the frame of the doorway calls his name
They share stories of the past as his vast eyes gaze on her face
He can see the shadows of the creases as he pieces together their fate
And they stare at the time as they climb into bed now it's late
And he asks
Do you know where I am
Could you stand where I stand
Is there nothing that you would change
‘Cause there's a mosaic on the wall
Made from the pieces of us all
And I hope there is nothing that you would trade
Everything she knew she thought she would know forever
But she's just happy to spend her life with him forever

Tales To Tell
05:14
|
|||
A million miles it seems it takes to the next day
On a road that's paved with the steps of an old face
Lost my words and I lost my mind
When I found out who wore the king’s crown
It's hard to shout when your throat is as dry as the dirt ground
Well he must be found
And I won't stop the search
Though I'll end at the end of the earth
With the Morning Brigade
That'll fight till the end of all days
Though the wind won't blow our sails
We will still we will still prevail
We search lands far and wide
Through the deepest canyons and the mountains so high
Just to find those words that would ease our minds
We'll have tales to tell when we finally arrive
Yeah we'll have tales to tell when we finally arrive
And I won't stop the search
Though I'll end at the end of the earth
With the Morning Brigade
That'll fight till the end of all days
Though the wind won't blow our sails
We will still we will still prevail

Rough Patch
04:29
|
|||
A falling out that went through a rough patch
Where we thought none could possibly grow
Through our garden by the lilies
A weed was creeping silently below
We grabbed our shovels our gloves and our shears
To fight the trouble that we had always feared
But as we conquered through the cries and through the tears
Another weed would always reappear
And though your eyes could sustain the plants with each wistful tear you shed
Through your heart roots do implant feelings I must have misread
So when you steal back your heart
And you steal away through the dark
Well I will tend to the garden
That you neglected from the start
Golden petals would fly away
With each and every approaching autumn day
Now the stem so bare and alone
Could call no garden his home sweet home
And though my thumbs have been stained by the green in the grass
Well your eyes they never strayed no matter how many times I walked past
So when you steal back your heart
And you steal away through the dark
Well I will tend to the garden
That you neglected from the start

Deep Light
04:13
|
|||
I fall into the deep light
That's scattered on the floor
I shatter into pieces
And get swept up under the door
Your face is full of sadness
I can see it in your eyes
Just jump into the shadows
And fall into the deep deep light
I count up all my blessings
And I keep them in a tin
They cut out the bottom
Begin to flow from within
And they fall

A North Wind
06:09
|
|||
A north wind cracks my lips
But your warm skin soothes as I kiss you
We sew through the boughs and tree limbs
Just to find out where we have been
The air is laced with your breath
The smell of vanilla laid siege on your neck
We warm our feet as we lay in my bed
And refuse to sleep til the early AM
And we could hear the sound
Through the cracks in the ground
Of an approaching winter chill
So we ran inside
To stay warm and to hide
As the snow lay on our window sill
I could see the reflection of your eyes
We could hear the wolves howl in harmony
As your boots made tracks in the snow towards me
And the woods provided our symphony
And we danced and we danced, we were free we were free
And we could hear the sound
Through the cracks in the ground
Of an approaching winter chill
So we ran inside
To stay warm and to hide
As the snow lay on our window sill
I could see the reflection of your eyes
Go now on your own way just
Go now don't be afraid just
Go now on your own way

Said And Done
05:07
|
|||
Walking though the town
All the lights are out
But I can still see them smiling
Sounds of stepping feet
Walking through the street
But I can hear their voices
Swinging bar doors
Lead to men on the floor
So much time has been wasted
Call to arms my friends
Pick up your empty pens
Can you write on the blank pages
‘Cause I have seen too many men who have never won
When everything in their lives have been said and done
Can they feel the rain, can they feel the sun
Can they only feel the triggers of their guns
Drugs running through their veins
Leaving permanent stains
In their hearts and in their heads
Help them to forget
The lives that they have led
What a shame
What a shame shame shame
‘Cause I have seen too many men who have never won
When everything in their lives have been said and done
Can they feel the rain, can they feel the sun
Can they only feel the triggers of their guns

There's a crow on my fence
And he's crying out for his mama
I ask if he needs any help
He said he could handle it himself
But then I wonder why he's crying out at all
And he goes
Well if you have to ask
Then you've probably never flown to the tops of the trees
Well if you have to ask then you're probably not me
There's a fish in my pond
And she's crying out for her daddy
I ask if she needs any help
She said she could handle it herself
But then I wonder why she's crying out at all
And she goes
Well if you have to ask
Then you've probably never swum to the bottom of the sea
Well if you have to ask then you're probably not me
And there's boy in my mirror
And he watches as I cry
He asks if I need any help
I said I could handle it myself
But then he wonders why I'm crying at all
And I go
Well if you have to ask
Then you've probably never fallen in love like me
If you have to ask
Then you've probably never wandered aimlessly
Well if you have to ask
Then you've probably never seen the yellow I seen
If you have to ask
Then you're probably not green

Still Storm
04:57
|
|||
I hunger for your face ‘cause I know I can't replace all the days we have spent
And words inside my head blur with things unsaid, but I'm still glad that we met
And mountains made of grey is where I'll hide my shame
My heart is hardly kept
And time is ticking right, sifting through days and nights
And I am sprinting left
Holes on my screen door that's swinging on my porch
I feel the warm wind freeze
And perfect raindrops land lightly on the tops of the steaming streets
And the summer time air no longer smells as fair now that it's laced with memories
And I thought I let go
But my heart says Oh No
Now I just pretend that I'm free
I live my life uncertain
Hide behind this curtain
Get stabbed by Hamlet's sword
An unintended murder
My heart can go no further
I wish I could go home
So I wouldn't feel so alone

Honest By Nature
04:27
|
|||
Honest by nature, he loved God's papers
That spoke of a truth that was destined to come
But his pen began shaking as his hands started aching
Unable to put down the words that would sum
The feeling
No promises were made
A battle
Between his love and his faith
A growing resentment
His love turned to contempt
For the one who had spoken of a truth yet to come
But what is more honest than a truth-bearing contest
When your opponent speaks solely of truths yet to come
The feeling
No promises were made
A battle
Between his love and his faith
Honest by nature

Morning Brigade Chapel Hill, North Carolina
When Peter Vance came to Chapel Hill from Washington, DC, he had been playing his songs as a one-man band for years. Pianist Gabriel Reynolds approached Peter with an interest in giving his songs the treatment they deserved. It was with the addition of Christian Adams' cello, Eli Howells' fiddling fingers, Nathan Spain's drumming, and Mary Koenig's harmonies that the songs truly came to life. ... more
